Assessment of response of freshwater microbial communities to bitumen-derived high molecular weight compounds and their recovery conditions post-spill

Funding period: 2024-2028
Lead: Nayereh Saborimanesh
Total GRDI funding: $350,000

The project objectives are: to understand the effect of deposited oils such as bitumen and biofuels on sedimentary nitrification processes in river environment; to investigate the mechanisms underlying reduced nitrification in the presence of oil, specifically, whether this is due to competition for nitrogen between hydrocarbon-degrading microbes and nitrifiers, or a direct inhibitory effect of oil on nitrifying communities; and to assess whether the negative impact of oil contamination on nitrification is reversible over time or with remediation.
