Biocontrol is a key component of a systems approach to pest management that provides long-term self-sustaining control of pests, reducing the input of pesticides into the environment and filling gaps in pest control needs when chemical pesticides are withdrawn from the market. The use of biocontrol in pest management systems also mitigates climate change impacts and enhances biodiversity – both of which serve to build more resilient agroecosystems. In alignment with a Biovigilance approach, team members will address important biocontrol opportunities in the four phases of the biocontrol continuum: (1) Horizon scanning for biocontrol opportunities for new or emerging invasive threats to Canadian agriculture; (2) Foreign exploration, characterization, and risk assessment of candidate biocontrol agents for invasive pests in Canada; (3) Regulatory approval, release and/or re-distribution of biocontrol agents for pests of concern for Canadian agriculture; (4) Post-release assessment of established biocontrol agents in Canadian agro-ecosystems. The proposed project includes critical research to assess, develop, and advance biocontrol strategies for 16 invasive pest species, including 9 invasive insect species (Spotted Lanternfly, Carnation Tortrix, Strawberry Blossom Weevil, Japanese Beetle, Diamondback Moth, Leek Moth, Thrips parvispinus, Spotted Wing Drosophila, Brown Marmorated Stink Bug) and 7 invasive weed species (Oxeye Daisy, Tree of Heaven, Hawkweeds, Flowering Rush, Phragmites, Knapweed, Yellow Toadflax). In addition, the benefits and risks of biocontrol for management of Spotted Wing Drosophila will be co-investigated with Indigenous partners as it relates to protection and revitalization of berries in traditional Indigenous food systems.
