Development of traceability systems supporting enforcement efforts for legal forest products

The main objectives of the project are to: 1) determine the usefulness of genomic resources to trace back the geographic origin of wood specimens using georeferenced CFS materials; 2) improve biochemical profiling methods using mass spectrometry (DART-MS) for species and geographic origin identification, and validate its use for conifer species; and 3) enhance the collection of physical reference samples for Canadian species. This project will primarily improve the ECCC's ability to fulfill its regulatory mandate regarding the legal imports of forest products by providing it with more efficient and accurate tools and methods for species and geographic origin identification.
