Expanding PulseNet Canada Genomics for public health preparedness of neglected and emerging enteric pathogens Vibrio, Yersinia, and Cryptosporidium

Funding period: 2019-2023
Leads: Celine Nadon and Rebecca Guy
Total GRDI funding: $400,000

Novel outbreaks, impacts of climate change, and health equity in Canada's north all contribute to increasing concern regarding non-epidemic Vibrio cholerae (i.e., V. cholerae lacking the specific virulence factors required for sustained epidemics), Yersinia enterocolitica, and the parasite Cryptosporidium. Specific outcomes will include tools for enhanced surveillance of Cryptosporidium and descriptive genomic epidemiology of Vibrio and Yersinia. These will fill the significant gaps in basic knowledge about these organisms that present significant public health risk to Canadians.
