Using Environmental DNA (eDNA) to Detect and Monitor Aquatic Invasive Species

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) continues to expand the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) to detect and monitor aquatic invasive species (AIS). As more species are identified as at risk of introduction or establishment in Canadian waters, molecular tools like qPCR (quantitative polymerase chain reaction) are critical for early detection.

qPCR assays are currently the most widely used eDNA method due to their high sensitivity and compatibility with existing lab infrastructure within DFO.

This project aims to develop and validate at least eight new qPCR assays for AIS identified as priorities by DFO's AIS programs, including the Aquatic Invasive Species National Core Program (AIS-NCP) and AIS Science. These tools will strengthen early detection and monitoring efforts, helping protect Canadian aquatic ecosystems from the impacts of invasive species.
